peat-free for me babes xxx

Albert Heijn, what are you waiting for?

Albert Heijn’s shelves are still filled with peat-products - potting soil, house plants, produce, you name it. Peat is extracted from ancient and swampy peatlands. The mining of peat releases a tremendous amount of CO2* and destroys essential freshwater sources. All, while alternatives are readily available.

*peatland destruction causes 5% of the annual global CO2 emissions. That is twice as much as the aviation industry!

Albert Heijn, market leader of Dutch supermarkets, can choose to make a difference. We urge Albert Heijn to:

1. Transparency and accountability on the use and retail of peat

2. A decisive phase-out of peat and products grown with peat-extracted soil from their stores.

3. Leadership in a just transition towards a peat-free and regenerative horticulture.
